Other than running shoes and tons of sports clothing (t-shirts, shorts…) Adidas also has a wide variety of martial arts gears on the market and has a quite decent gis which draw attention.
Adidas Stars and Stripes Limited Edition Review
Durability: 9.0 / 10.0
Comfort: 8.6 / 10.0
Cost Efficiency: 8.5 / 10.0
Product: Adidas Stars and Stripes
- Pearl Weave
- Decent (only a bit tapered) design
- Good range of motion
- Good all-around gi
This gi is limited edition but if you want to know my guess Adidas will produce this gi a lot more. Because even though it is a limited edition it has the most quality.
This gi is another gi which has pearl weave and slim fit cut. But it is not that “tapered”. The meaning is that there will be still a bit room at chest and sides of the jacket. If you don’t like extra tight gis, this design may suit you.
It is pearl weave and it is a blend of cotton and polyester which is the preferred blend for the durability. So the durability is good as it gets. It is light but it is not the lightest. Let me explain. Due to not so tapered design, more materials are used to make this gi. So there are jiu-jitsu kimonos which are better at this particular department but still it is quite good about it.
The pants are ripstop and you can roll with it for a long period of time. It also has six cord loops so if you tie your belt right, it will stay in place.
There is extra padding for the reinforcement of the knee part as it gets a huge amount of deformation during the session.
The following should not come as a surprise. Adidas provides you the best comfort. The liner is quite soft and your skin, neck part will not get rashes or get red while doing escapes. The design and lining also allow your sweat to escape and literally this gi is one of the best when it comes to comfort.
About Shrinking: Thanks to the blend, this gi shrinks less. If it was made of cotton you can expect standard shrinkage however this one shrinks less because of the blend. If you prefer it to shrink more you can iron it or wash the gi at higher temperatures.
Guys, I know some Adidas Jiu Jitsu Gis have problems about fitting. However, this one has quite good ratings about that as well.
Basically, Adidas Stars and Stripes is quite durable, has a slightly tapered design and provides excellent thermal regulating qualities.
It has awesome color selections including gray and Navy.
Adidas Challenge BJJ350 Gi Pearl Weave Review
Durability: 8.8 / 10.0
Comfort: 8.5 / 10.0
Cost Efficiency: 8.2 / 10.0
- Classic design
- 350 gsm pearl weave
- Decent thermal regulating qualities
- Does not have any superior features
Adidas Challenge BJJ350 does not have a tapered design or looks like the gi above. It is a standard gi. It is made of cotton and has 350 gsm pearl weave which is quite common for extending durability and comfort.
Basically, it will do the job just fine but the body part is not tapered or fits in a way that there is less fabric for your opponents to make a grip. I really can’t see how it can help someone to perform better on mats or provide any advantage in tournaments.
Adidas Challenge is quite light as it has 350 gsm pearl weave and the pants weigh less than %80 of other jiu-jitsu pants on the market. Unlike the jacket, you can expect pants to fit better.
This one is also IBJJF approved and one can enter the competition with it.
When it comes to price I noticed that it is a bargain. When you look at other pearl weave gis there are some kimonos which are double the price tag of Adidas Challenge. It gets A- for the quality-price ratio.
The round lace is inside so it lowers the chances of opening during practice so it will definitely save you from tying it again during the session which can bother a lot of people. It is also located quite well and you literally don’t notice it during the session.
The foam at the neck part helps sweat dry fast. However, it is only positive if you train long hours. If that is you, after doing sparring with your opponent it will get sweaty and the next time you step on mats and do submissions it will be dry. This quality comes in handy in this situation.
As a final note, Adidas Challenge BJJ350 has a lot of different sizes. According to the company, you can find a gi for any age and in addition to that, there are female sizes which are designed for females. Also, it comes as preshrunk so don’t expect it to shrink a lot.
Update: I needed to update this article after reading the overviews of Adidas BJJ430 and you will understand after reading below.
Adidas BJJ430 Contest Pearl Review
Durability: 9.4 / 10.0
Comfort: 9.1 / 10.0
Cost Efficiency: 8.6 / 10.0
- High pearl gsm number
- Tailored parts
- Good design
- Quite light
- Good quality price ratio
- The most quality one on this list!
- Has IBJJF certification
- Not popular
Adidas BJJ 430 Contest Pearl Gi is just better for competing than the gi above which is Adidas Challenge BJJ 350. Let’s continue with the review of this better option.
The jacket has a couple of different tailored parts. These tailored parts are made for different body parts including the chest. This is the main reason why this kimono has excellent feedback.
Thanks to anatomically fitted parts, you can move your arms shoulders without any restriction while doing various submissions.
Also, thanks to these tailored parts the material quantity, which is used to make this gi, is less than usual and obviously this lowers the weight of the jacket.
Obviously, this one has also IBJJF certification as well. If you are one of the guys who is getting ready for a gi tournament I highly suggest you at least have a look at Adidas BJJ430 Contest Pearl.
This one is not a popular one however a few seasoned practitioners, black belts prefer this kimono in tournaments like JJWL. And in my opinion, this gi is one of the most quality gis on the market. So why it is not popular? I guess the reason is that this gi is not advertised well. Even I had found it after a couple of days of research on forums and sending e-mails to various people.
Considering the durability it also gives your money’s worth. 430 gsm pearl weave is quite good for the durability. It is quite close to 500 gsm and I trained with 500 gsm pearl weave gis. The parts, which are likely to get deformation over time, have extra stitching for extending the durability.
My estimation is that you can expect to roll over 2 years even if you train frequently.
Adidas BJJ430 Contest comes pre-shrunk and there will be basically no shrinkage after a wash. The fabric is also suitable for cold wash.
As other gis this one also has many sizes.
Fitting Issues: Some Adidas Gis have fitting issues as some practitioners report these on forums. However, I chose well-rated ones. The first gi (Adidas Stars and Stripes) gets excellent and the other two get average feedback. So don’t worry about the fitting issues for the kimonos above.
However, you can sometimes solve fitting issues with just shrinking but that solution may not be enough for some problems. For example, if the shoulder part is really loose, shrinking possibly will not solve this issue. However, if pants or sleeves are a bit longer than normal, it can fit well after a few hot washes.
Adidas Gi Reviews consist of my personal experiences, research on jiu-jitsu forums and I included experiences of one of my loyal commentators in this article.
There are definitely a few quality kimonos of this company. I particularly like the first one (Adidas Stars and Stripes). If you are more advanced and have a year or two years of experience under your belt, you can think about investing in this gi. With that being said, the second gi is alright and if you just start your jiu-jitsu journey, you can consider it as it has quite basic qualities. And lastly, the third one is made for competitions.
All of them look quite good with three stripes on the shoulder. It is the signature of Adidas Gis and the others also have them as well.
