Atama has been around since 1989 and this Japanese word means intelligence. This company produces equipment and gears for MMA and BJJ including rash guards, BJJ belts, gis, MMA shorts and more. Also, many gi models are produced in Brazil.
With that, in my opinion, Atami is one of the good quality gi brands out there and some high authoritative figures in BJJ actually think that some of the jiu-jitsu kimonos are the best ones on the market.
I also have witnessed that this brand is fairly popular in Croatia and without further ado let’s start Atama Gi review with a popular model and see what is so special about these gis.

- Single weave + material blend
- One of the lightest gis
- Rip stop pants
- CBJJ and IBJFF approved
- One of the top-notch gis
Atama Light Jiu Jitsu Gi deserves its name. It weighs around only 3 pounds and this is really light for a gi. So you can be sure that while you are doing submissions on mats, you can move really fast and the design is decent and won’t hinder your movements.
As you can guess, this quality also provides really good comfort and the moisture wicking quality is decent and in my opinion, it does not need to be superb since you will sweat way less than normal during your grappling sessions.
As a side note, this construction makes it softer than usual.
With that, it won’t be baggy for 1-2 years. Also, rip stop pants outlast the jacket. So considering these, it gets B+ for the durability. As a side note I don’t know why but this gi is vastly popular in BJJ gyms in Croatia. If you are interested, have a closer look at Atama Light Jiu Jitsu Gi.
As a final note, it is IBJJF and CBJJ approved and considering its really lightweight and good ground work performance, I can say that it can be a really good option for jiu-jitsu tournaments.
Atama Mundial Model 9 Gi
Training Quality (weight + freedom): 9.0 / 10.0
Durability: 9.0 / 10.0
Comfort: 8.6 / 10.0
Quality / Price Rating: 8.5 / 10.0
- Carioca weave
- Really good tapered design
- Rip stop pants
- Good comfort
As you may know, Mundial design is very famous among BJJ athletes. This design is tapered, fits well and sleeves are tapered as well. So it gives less fabric for your opponents to make a hard grip which will definitely give you an advantage while you are in a match.
With that, you may not have heard of carioca weave before. It is basically pearl weave and single weave blend. So it is less sturdy than pearl weave however, it is lighter than pearl weave as well. However, keep in mind that it is still the sturdiest gi on this list. It is also reinforced for longer durability. This weave is almost as comfortable as its single weave matches and in addition to that, this fabric wicks the moisture quite well.
Mundial 9 has no seams on the back. Because of this, the construction changes and it improves the range of motion.
According to my research, after the first wash, the sides shrink a bit however after that, the shrinking will be negligible. With that, definitely, wash it at recommended temperatures!
As a side note, these qualities actually make Atama Mundial 9 ideal for me.
If I count all the models, Mundial 9 is the 10. model of Mundial series and this tells you that many practitioners religiously prefer this series and the company makes slight adjustments according to customers’ feedback so while you are rolling on the mats you can have better experience.
If these are appealing to you, get your own Atama Mundial 9 Gi on Amazon.
Atama Single Weave
Training Quality (weight + freedom): 8.8 / 10.0
Durability: 8.5 / 10.0
Comfort: 9.2 / 10.0
Quality / Price Rating: 8.7 / 10.0
- Single weave
- %100 cotton
- Great comfort
This gi accommodates most body types and it has a quite simple design. And even though it is suitable for everyone, people, who have the average body type, tend to give slightly better feedback.
Well you don’t have to worry about sweat since cotton wicks it quite fast and single weave provides amazing comfort and as a result, you will sweat less and be comfortable.
Single weave has a lightweight and quality kimonos, which are made from single weave, are recommended to beginners for a long time in dojos.
This plain gi is made in Brazil. I think that this gi looks just awesome with this logo and yet it has a simple design.

Why Should You Consider Atama Kimonos?
As you read above, the company provides unique styles and unique blends. In my opinion, this is just great since we get to choose a unique kimono for ourselves and one of these may be a perfect fit for you. I also know that the prices can be higher than you expected. One of the most important reasons is that some of the gis above have no seams on the back. This changes construction and design and it basically increases the price tag. But this also provides you mobility.
If you are interested in one of the gis above definitely look at the prices and see whether you can afford it or not. With that, you may see that some Atama Gis do not have good fitting feedback, however, I put the quality ones, which have decent fitting feedback, in this writing. Another interesting note is that as you may know from my social media accounts, I travel a lot and interestingly enough, considering my experiences, Atama Gis are truly popular in Europe.
At the end of the writings, I normally put a recommended gi however as I said earlier, you need to read the reviews above and decide it for yourself and body type.
As a final note, Atama Gis are not suitable for grappling dummies. I actually could not find out the reason and have not tried it yet but these just don’t stay on grappling dummies. So if you plan on dressing your grappling dummy with a gi, you should look for another brand like Venum or Hayabusa.
I hope that this Atama Gi review is informative for you and if you have questions or experiences, please feel free to share them below.
