The Top 10 Best Boxing Headgear Reviews

When we spar we need the best protection possible. After all, it is not a real match and we show up in the ring to learn something and improve our skills, right? Mouth guard and even your sparring partner’s boxing gloves should protect you. However, headgear is the most important factor for protection. Also if a headgear has certain qualities, it can even help you show better training performance in your sessions.

Below you can find the top rated boxing headgears on the market. I also used some of these and before I compiled this list, I had read all boxing forum posts, reviews of only verified purchases on shopping sites and I also got in touch with many trainers as well. Shortly I did my homework 😉 Also I included my experiences, extensive brand overviews and the complete buyer’s guide for helping you make a more educated choice.

Without further ado let’s start best boxing headgear reviews with number ten.

Important Note: All boxing headgears on this list have great fitting rates and you can also find sizing information at the product pages.

Also as other headgears, which are made in Thailand, the moisture wicking qualities are quite well.

Cons

  • Slightly longer break-in period

First of all this headgear is made of genuine leather and it is handmade. As other Fairtex products, you get more than what you pay. It is sturdy and the padding always gets good reviews. It protects your head against hard blows. I also have experiences with Fairtex products and these all have one thing in common and it is the long break in period. Some people don’t care about break-in period but some people don’t like it at all. Actually, it is just a preference. However, if you don’t mind longer break-in period (around 2-3 weeks) and want to be “relatively” comfortable during your session then Fairtex Super Sparring is a great option. At the product page, there is also a sizing chart and different cool design selections. You can measure your head’s circumference and get it accordingly.

Also, Ringside uses gel padding and many boxing companies started using this technology because it just works fine. I also used Ringside in my old boxing gym and even though it has a lot of padding on the cheek part, I had a good vision. You can also adjust the straps (back and chin) of Ringside Headgear for a better fit.

Let’s continue with the best headgear for the money…

7. Ring to Cage Deluxe Full Face GelTech

  • Covers ALL face
  • Very quality padding
  • Adjustable strap

Ring to Cage is one of the companies which have only a few quality products on the market and Deluxe is one of them. It covers all of your face and when you get punched, the sparring glove can barely touch your face. It also provides perfect vision. Considering these, the design is remarkable. If you want to protect your nose incredibly well, Ring to Cage is a really solid option and the padding also gets amazing feedback from boxing forums and won’t lose its quality at least 2 years.

Even though it is made of synthetic leather, Deluxe lasts more than 2 years and I can easily say that you get way more than what you pay. If you are on a budget and want to get the best product possible then you should definitely take a closer look at Deluxe. You can also find sizing information as well.

Lastly, it has an adjustable strap and you can adjust it fast and easily.

6. Cleto Reyes Headgear with Cheek Protection

best boxing headgear for eye protectionProtection Rating: 9.3 / 10.0

Training Quality and Vision Rating: 9.0 / 10.0

Durability: 9.4 / 10.0

Comfort: 9.3 / 10.0

Quality / Price Rating: 9.4 / 10.0

Exclusive Features

  • Top notch genuine leather (cowhide)
  • Perfect vision
  • Heavily padded on cheek area
  • Very quality padding
  • Comfortable
  • Adjustable crown area for better fit

Cleto Reyes has awesome products and always produces its products with most quality materials. Cleto Reyes Headgear is made of cowhide leather and it is one of the sturdiest materials. According to forum members, it does not have any defects, rough spots at least three years.

The cheek area has a lot of latex foam padding and when you take a punch around this area, it softens the impact a lot and provides really good protection for your cheeks and eyes. With that, even though it has more padding at the eye part, it does not block your vision which is a common problem for other headgears which has extra cheek protection. So if you prefer really good protection for your cheeks, it is a solid option. Also, have you ever used a headgear which is tight in the crown area? I sparred with one of them and because of the headgear I was already uncomfortable and it was not a pleasant experience at all. However, you can adjust Cleto Reyes Headgear’s crown area and chin part according to your preference and this is another plus. If you want to know more about this headgear, have a look at verified cıstomer reviews for more in-depth information.

Cleto Reyes headgear with Cheek Protection has many color selections including blue and white.

  • Layers of foam
  • Good vision
  • Heavily padded
  • Hook and loop system
  • Comfortable

This headgear has a lot of padding at everywhere. This includes forehead, ears, back. With that, it is still not heavy. As you can see it has a classic design and I know that many commercial boxing gyms suggest Title Gel World Full-Face for sparring sessions! It has good quality genuine leather and good lining which wicks the moisture like there is no tomorrow.

It has velcro closure and you can adjust it according to your preference. Title Gel World Full-Face is wildly popular and I have barely heard anything bad about it. So, I can easily say that this headgear is a “safe” choice and you can’t go wrong with it. Also, Title Gel World Full-Face has a good quality-price ratio.

4. Fighting Sports No Contact Headgear

the review of really quality boxing headgear for face protectionProtection Rating: 9.6 / 10.0

Training Quality and Vision Rating: 9.4 / 10.0

Exclusive Features

  • Full grain (very quality) leather
  • Full face protection and no contact
  • Good vision for a headgear with face bar
  • Very heavily padded face bar
  • Adjustable chin strap
  • Comfortable (for a no contact headgear)
  • I have awesome experiences with it!

Fighting Sports No Contact Headgear is made of full grain leather and has one size. It has an adjustable chin strap and you can adjust it quite fast and easily. As you can see, it has very heavily padded face bar. I have used many headgears with face bar and I can say that I simply loved the protection of Fighting Sports. It was also comfy enough and provided good vision without sliding. Seriously I can’t ask more from a headgear which has heavily padded face bar.

I had a nose surgery couple of years ago and I try to be extremely careful about my nose. I always train with headgears which have face bar. Fighting Sports No Contact has heavily padded face bar and it provided really good protection for my nose during sparring. As you may already know, full-grain leather has serious quality and sturdiness. I also felt natural with the cushioning and you can easily expect to use Fighting Sports around 2-3 years.

3. Cleto Reyes Traditional Headgear

Protection Rating: 9.9 / 10.0

Training Quality and Vision Rating: 9.5 / 10.0

  • Full face protection
  • Perfect vision
  • Very heavily padded
  • Light
  • Comfortable
  • Adjustable top and chin strap
  • Good fitting rate
  • The best quality-price ratio among top 3 headgears

As other Cleto Reyes products, this one also has top-notch materials and classic design. ALL areas are heavily padded. But one thing is simply remarkable about this headgear and it is lighter than many other guards so you can dodge, move with it fast. This directly affects your training performance in a positive way. According to my experiences with other Cleto Reyes products, Cleto Reyes always gives so much importance to training performance.

This headgear also has an adjustable chin and top straps. You will feel like it is made for your head. Many verified buyers also say that Cleto Reyes Traditional Headgear is the most quality boxing headgear in the world and they don’t spar without it. Also, over the years, I have seen Cleto Reyes in many different countries. The ratings for comfort are superb and Cleto Reyes Traditional Headgear also has the greatest quality-price ratio among top three headgears on this list. If these are appealing to you, I highly suggest you buy your own Cleto Reyes.

  • The best in its class!

As you may know, Winning does not do any advertisements or commercials. However its fame is just so huge in the boxing world and everyone, who trains boxing, seems to know it.

As you may know, people, who are trusted members in Sherdog, are generally ruthless when they criticize the products and this head guard has incredible reviews even on there! But why Winning Headgear Fg2900 is one of the best boxing headgears? Firstly, the materials are way superior and provide more durability. You can have 4+ years of durability with Winning.

Last but certainly not least, the weight is only 9.5 oz. and it gets very good “fitting” rates. So why are these important? When your most valuable asset, which is your head, is a smaller target, then obviously you will be safer and you can also show much better performance during training. These are other important factors why it is the best. Also, many people say that they always feel very comfortable with its cushion.

Even though it has a more expensive price tag, the quality and durability period are unmatched. Even Cleto Reyes does not provide same durability or cushion. If these are appealing to you, take a closer look at Winning Fg2900. You can also see the sizing information on that page. It has also many cool color selections including yellow, black and blue. As a final note, this headgear has a more expensive price than many other headgears but still, it is one of the most popular boxing headgears on the market! Because people are sure that they will they get premium quality.

1. Winning Headgear FG5000

Durability: 10.0 / 10.0

Comfort: 10.0 / 10.0

Quality / Price Rating: 8.5 / 10.0

Exclusive Features

  • Top notch leather
  • Perfect vision
  • Protects all of your face
  • Incredible padding quality
  • Even lighter than the older model!
  • Adjustable strap
  • The top-rated boxing headgear by everywhere!

Winning FG5000 always gets the best ratings from everywhere. The leather is same with the other model (Winning FG 2900) and again you can expect to use this headgear at least 4 years! The padding is also same and superb however the design is different. Winning FG500o protects all of your face and it is actually lighter than the previous model and it is just 15 oz.! As a side note, the older model is 21 oz.

So it has the 2/3 weight of the older model and I am sure that everyone, who does sparring, would appreciate this greatly. Because you can move faster and your head will be even a smaller target. These are the reasons why people always prefer FG5000. It also wicks the moisture quite fast and this headgear always stays where it supposed to be and you can trust me on this it never lowers your vision!

Seriously I really don’t think that any other product can top this headgear.

If you are looking for truly the best boxing headgear, definitely have a look at Winning FG5000 on Amazon. You can also find sizing information as well and it has white, green, red, and blue color selections.

Boxing Headgear Buyer’s Guide

Padding: There are a couple of padding types and companies mostly use layered foam padding which provides the shock distribution within layers. In this way, the delivered shock to next layer becomes less. Considering my experiences, it just works perfectly. Another commonly used padding type is sponge foam which also seems to work. There are also gel types and the quality actually varies a lot. So if you get a headgear, which has gel padding, definitely do your research well. With that, when the padding quality is higher, your headgear obviously protects you better but it also extends the durability. Because good quality padding will start softening way longer than low-quality padding.

Design: If the design is good, your head will be a smaller target, your headgear will have less weight and you will be able to see whether a punch comes to you or not.

With that, the padding can lower your vision. Especially headgears with extra cheek protection have this problem. Design simply should allow you to see clearly so you can evade from punches.

Obviously, the design also affects fitting rate directly. If the headgear slides and blocks your vision it won’t be cool right? So it affects almost everything and has truly vital importance. According to many authoritative figures, it is the most important factor while buying a boxing headgear. Shortly, it does not affect only the safety, but it also affects the training performance. So I strongly suggest that don’t get a product which you don’t know enough about the design.

Cover Material: Genuine leather types feel more “natural and smooth” and these types (cowhide etc.) tend to last a lot longer than synthetic leather or blends. Some headgear cover materials like cowhide, full-grain can even last more than 4 years. You can also clean them with antibacterial wipes quite easily. As you can guess, when you choose genuine leather instead of synthetic, the price can double up.

Weight: Design, cover material, padding quantity, and padding type determine the weight. Obviously, you can show way better training performance with light boxing headgears.

Comfort: The lining should wick the moisture quite well and it should be soft so you don’t feel any discomfort. With that, headgears, which are made in Thailand, generally provide really good comfort and air regulation.

Break-in period: The factors are cover material and padding type. Based on my experiences, if the padding is softer, you will have a shorter break-in period. Also, I had the longest break-in periods with headgears which are handmade.

Boxing Headgear Vs. MMA Headgear

In MMA or Muay Thai, you clinch, do submission etc. so MMA headgears are smaller and have denser padding. You don’t have these in boxing so boxing headgears are bulkier and offer more protection for direct punches. When the padding is more, it absorbs the shock more so your head is less affected by punches.

With that, MMA headgear has less padding and cover material. Actually, this is why MMA headgears generally have more affordable price tags. As a final note, due to the construction MMA headgears usually have better air regulating qualities as well.

Brand Overviews

Good Boxing Headgear Brands

Winning: It has the most quality boxing headgears on the market and the company has been consistent for a really long time. In my opinion, it is the best boxing equipment company out there. Also, the padding of it is soft and the shock just disperses better.

Cleto Reyes: Cleto Reyes is another brand which always produces products with premium materials and considering my experiences, you can always expect good durability. I also love the Mexican Style 😉

Ring to Cage: Alright I trained with four different Ring to Cage Boxing Headgears and I am satisfied with all of them. These always stayed in place. However, one of them is slightly heavier than normal and one of them slightly bothered my head but other than these I don’t have any complaints so considering my experiences, Ring to Cage definitely deserves to be on this list.

The Worst Boxing Headgear Brands

Sanabul: I have never used Sanabul but I only read horrible reviews on forums and also heard horrible things (block vision etc.) from my friends. Sanabul has only a few headgears on the market and according to me, we are not likely to see Sanabul Headgears in the future. Because there are far better options in the same price range.

Wanda: Alright, I actually sparred with one of the most popular headgears of Wanda (I can’t give the name here, but you may have already guessed it). I was literally feeling the impacts way more than usual. Even though I had a perfect vision all the time the padding quality just sucked.

Also, some brands have good and the worst headgears on the market…

Everlast and Rival: Alright, these brands have many boxing headgears on the market. But material quality, material type, and design vary a lot. Both of these brands have very good boxing headgears but also have headgears which can jeopardize your health. So definitely have look at the reviews, verified purchase customer testimonials etc. before you spend any money!

Why Should You Own a Good Quality Boxing Headgear?

First of all, it will always be a right fit for your head (you may not find a right size in gyms) and this makes a huge difference while sparring. Secondly, headgears in boxing gyms already had someone else’s blood and sweat. This can cause health problems so I highly suggest you train with your own.

I hope that you enjoyed reading the best boxing headgear reviews and I tried to cover everything as much as possible however if you have anything to add, ask or share please don’t hesitate to leave a comment below.

  1. Some very good suggestions here, I like Venum Elite Headgear the most because it looks awesome, however, if I have to step in the ring I will definitely prefer you number 1 recommendation because I understand that durability and comfort matters a lot. A person must able to concentrate in order to perform well and only a headgear that is comfortable could allow that. Very informative post!

    • Furkan says:

When you consider Venum products, Venum Elite just stands out more and the durability, protection of it is just better. Also the price difference between the Challenger is so little. You can just go with Elite without a doubt 😉
      You are welcome man.

  2. Keith says:

I am glad to see the Cleto Reyes up there in your rankings punching its weight! I like more traditional brands as long as they retain their authenticity and quality. Do you think its okay to buy your headgear over the internet without really trying it on for comfort?

    • Furkan says:

Man I actually prefer the same and may people also prefer in that way. I know that many people buy online and I am one of them I get all gears in that way. You can actually save a lot of money and I refcently saw Winning’s price tag way more ($50) than its current amazon price.
Also you can get Cleto Reyes or any headgear on this list according to sizing charts. All product pages have it. Their fitting rate is quite high. So I don’t think that it will be a problem.

  3. JR Andrade says:

This is another amazing review Furkan. I remember reading one of your reviews about the boxing gloves, and now this. I never thought this can be an essential gear, even for normal trainings. I also appreciate the fact that you shared different levels of it, in class, in style and in comfort level. Thanks for this brother. I learned something from this.

    • Furkan says:

Well I write many boxing gloves reviews and I remember you and I am glad to see you here again man.
I always try mention the unique features and try my best. I also really like reading comments like yours.

  4. Luis says:

    Hi Furkan
Great reviews on boxing headgear. You present a great selection and give very detailed info on them.

I was wondering what wold be a good estimate time of the duration of these Headgears? Does it depend strongly on the times it’s been used?

    Thanks,
    Luis

    • Furkan says:

Man it depends on how many times it is used and of course the cover material also matters. Winning gives two times of durability of some headgears on this list. And Cleto Reyes is fine too.
You can expect to use Winning at least 3 years. Many people say that they have been using it after 4 years. Except Cleto Reyes none of these headgears can give durability period like that.

  5. Satria says:

It was a great recommendation and review here. I like the way you describe them.
But I have some question, how should I maintain this item to make it long last? Is it the same way as maintaining the boxing glove?

  6. Dela says:

Whew! That’s an exhaustive review, great work man. I’ve been thinking about starting sparring, and you just gave an important gear to consider and some amazing recommendations. Thanks for the information man.

    • Furkan says:

Man, you are welcome and these headgears will decrease the impact a lot and will help a beginner like you 😉 Have a nice time with sparring man.

  7. Hi Furkan,
I actually use to spar with one of my uncles(not professionally of course), and I wish I had seen this review before so I could have gotten the right gear. All these head-gear pieces look great, but if I had to choose one based on looks + ratings alone.. I’d personally go with the Venom Elite Headgear. Great review! Cheers,
    Darren

    • Furkan says:

Hi Darren, I think Venum Elite is suitable for you after all you don’t spar with your uncle for 4-5 years 😉 You can use it around 2 years and I also think that Venum’s design is cool. I currently have Venum’s MMA gloves it also looks nice. Apparently, the company cares about the looks.

  8. Irma says:

Awesome reviews! Lots of great choices with mostly pros and few cons, showing that there are a lot of quality products to choose from. Do any of the headgear that you reviewed to protect against rotational impacts?

    • Furkan says:

Thank you well I only used Cleto Reyes and Fighting Sports and get some these kinds of impacts with them. So personally, I did not have any problem with these two when I get hit.

  9. Jeremy says:

Great reviews Furkan! I like how there is value across the board in terms of the protection and ratings which you have given them.

They seem very fair in price too depending on the users skill set. I will have to show this to my brother as he is into muay thai and I think he will take interest in this.

    Thank you!

  10. Great review for each headgear. All information in one place. The ratings dividing into protection, comfort, durability really helps to know the safety and value for money of each headgear. I have some boxing friends will show this post which may help them. can we buy directly over net before actually trying it on?

    • Furkan says:

All of the headgears on this list have sizing information for head’s circumference. You can measure it and get your headgear accordingly. I always buy these gears online and I never ran into a fitting problem.

  11. Manny says:

    Hi bro!

I have a tiny head and I am just getting into boxing. I struggle with basecaps, helmets and whatsoever!

Which one would you recommend for smaller heads? Should I go to a retailer and try them on?

    Thanks

    • Furkan says:

If you get it according to sizing information on product pages, you won’t have any problem. Basically, you just need to measure the circumference of your head and you are good to go! Many headgears on this list have small models.

  12. Donovan Reich says:

What a comprehensive top 10! I’m not very familiar with boxing or MMA, but I see that there are a lot of factors that come into play when choosing a piece of training gear such as these headgears. I think anyone in the market for headgear will benefit from this information, concise and to the point, with links directly to purchase.

    Well done!

    – Donovan

  13. I do Thai Taekwondo once a week and I always wondered why my head seems a little heavier. After reading the article., I’m sure that I will consider to buy another one. I like the Cleto Reyes Headgear with Cheek Protection.

  14. hong says:

I loved the review. This is a very detailed and comprehensive review of boxing headgears. I was not too familiar with them before I read the post. But I have certainly learned a lot from reading your article. This information is very helpful for those looking for great headgears. Thank you so much for this information. It was a great read.

    • Furkan says:

You are welcome. I will actually update it with more headgears and information in this week. If you need any help or extra information, I am here to help ; )

  15. Emonne says:

    Hey Furkan,

    Great Post!

I don’t really watch boxing, but what I can say is that headgear is extremely important for the sport. This is a really great review on the gear that one needs for the sport.

I really appreciate how you break down the differences of each headgear from this list. I feel like this review will help a lot of people find the right headgear they are looking for.

    Really nice work,

    -Emonne

    • Furkan says:

It is deadly important ; ) Each headgear has unique differences and qualities and one might be a good fit for someone but it may suck for another person. So I included every quality and which one can be better for a particular boxer.

  16. Melinda Curle says:

These are great recommendations. Is there one that you feel would be great for a beginner? I’d definitely like something that is budget friendly as I tend to dabble in different sports and I don’t get too serious about them. However, as you pointed out, protecting your face should be of utmost importance!

    • Furkan says:

As a beginner, get one which has a lot of padding. This helps with the protection and it will be good for your first few days which can be quite rough. Also, check out whether your peripheral vision stays the same or not. You can read the reviews, I mentioned that for every boxing headgear.

  17. Hightek says:

Ringside Gel Sparring Boxing Headgear is my favorite. It’s grеаt fоr sparring, took a fеw соuntеr rіghtѕ аnd hооkѕ and I dіdnt fееl thе impact, but I ѕtіll gоt the еffесt thаt I dіd nоt wаnt tо gеt punched аgаіn. lol
Chіn ѕtrар wаѕ a little unсоmfоrtаblе, but thеу all аrе, аnd I саnt ѕtаnd thе full сhіn bаr ѕо it wаѕ a definite improvement. Ovеrаll really happy wіth thе product, but I’ve оnlу uѕеd it twісе ѕо nо input оn the lоng tеrm, but іf уоu take саrе of іt, аnd vаѕеlіnе it uр once іn a whіlе I аm sure іtѕ gоіng tо lаѕt.

    • Furkan says:

It is not a full face headgear but the padding at cheek is bulky and helps with the protection a lot. When it is the case, it is expected that it can protect the face from hooks as well.
Man, I agree with the chin bards Other than Cleto Reyes (Cheek Protection), it is not comfortable at all. I actually used some conditioning oils when I have genuine leather headgear and I generally take care of headgears regularly but I have never tried Vaseline if it works go for it.
