  • I have really amazing experiences with it!
  • It has the greatest quality-price ratio!

While I was training with RDX Maya, I had a really good vision. This just fitted my head perfectly and stayed in place. That continued even after I had sweated like crazy.

It has triple padding and as you can see it is bulky. Basically, it keeps punches away from your head and nose! With that, the padding is not heavy. Thanks to the quality padding, RDX is one of the lightest boxing headgears in its class.

My Experiences with the Vision and Research: I could see many punches coming to my head from many angles in many different situations. Considering the padding quantity, it is seriously a huge advantage. It is made of Maya hide leather and it is handmade. According to my research on forums, this headgear lasts around three years. Considering durability and training performance, it has truly the best quality-price ratio.

As a side note, this is the only headgear on this list which I have direct experiences with and I can recommend it to anyone who wants good protection! and as a final note, you will have a short break-in period which lasts around two weeks. Even though it is not much, I thought that you should know.

RDX Boxing MMA Protector Headgear (Maya Hide Leather)

Protection Rating: 9.1 / 10.0

Training Quality and Vision Rating: 8.8 / 10.0

Durability: 8.5 / 10.0

Comfort: 9.1 / 10.0

Quality / Price Rating: 9.6 / 10.0

This one is a different model of RDX and even though the materials are the same the design is different and the fewer materials are used for it. RDX Maya Hide Leather (this one) has a more ergonomic design and less padding. These actually change training performance and safety.

First of all, thanks to the padding quantity, RDX Maya (Protector) is the lightest headgear that provides decent protection. But it is less than other headgears on this list. However, keep in mind that protection is still decent. With that, you can move faster with it and it provides a good vision so you can evade from punches better.

Secondly, the face bar does not let punches touch you so your nose will be “safer” and inner lining of RDX has serious quality and gets really good reviews for thermal regulating qualities (meshes) and moisture wicking features on boxing forums.

With that, it is the cheapest headgear that has a good quality and according to my research, RDX Maya is the most sold headgear on the market.

Final Thoughts

These are best-rated headgears for nose protection and among these Cleto Reyes stands out the most. It gets amazing feedback for the protection, comfort… Also, you can use it for at least 4 years. If you want to have the best protection possible for your nose and face, definitely have a closer look at Cleto Reyes Headgear w / Nylon Face Bar.

Why are These Three on This List?

First of all, I read many reviews, testimonials. These three products almost always get positive reviews and I have personal experience with one of the headgears above. As you may have seen that all of these have face bars. These bars are very heavily padded and this is one of the most important qualities of a good headgear for nose protection. However even though it can protect you very well, a face bar can change the weight distribution of a headgear. I know that many products have this problem. However, the products above do not have this issue so you don’t need to compromise on your training quality!

While you are sparring, you definitely need a lot of good quality sparring equipment. A good mouth guard, sparring partner’s boxing gloves are important however your head ultimately relies on your headgear’s protection and it should be the best, period. I hope that you enjoyed the reading and if you have any questions, experiences or anything to add please have a comment below.

  1. Hi Furkan,

Great post. Not something many think about but I know when you are in the ring you want the best protection you can get. These items certainly seem to be the top of the range.

Great review. I do a bit of boxing at the gym so will consider one of these,

    Cheers,

    Kev

    1. Thanks Kevin, as you said headgear has serious importance for safety after all it protects our head 😉 And I am sure any of these will protect you.
I am also glad to see you here again man.

  2. Robert Prescott

Great review. Though I personally do not box I know those who do, and they always tell me that headgear while sparring is important. Head trauma is one of the major causes of many kinds of neurological disorders. Having quality headgear should be a no-brainer for the protection of the entire head area.

I would think that the FG5000 would be the best investment. Being cheap and saving money in the protection of your head in my opinion is a stupid decision. If you know you are going to get hit and repeated hits to the head will cause neurological problems later on in life, then choosing a top quality headgear just makes common sense.

    1. Man I totally agree with you. Some head gears just suck and don’t have enough padding and some of them even block vision which also sucks. And well we will get hit repeatedly and as you said Winning FG5000 will protect anyone who wears it.

    Hi,
I read your review with interest.
I did a bit of boxing years ago, but I never wore a headgear. However, you pointed out the advantage of those headgears very well.
Carry on with the good work.

  4. This is a nice and informative page on a specific topic!
You have narrowed down the selection of the best gear to get so the reader does not have to go through ALL the different options themselves. Protective gear is very important and should not be taken lightly! Thank you for making it an easy selection for me to choose my gear 😉

  5. Greetings Furkan;

Enjoyed reading your article on the boxing headgear. Sounds like you are like me and recommend products to people only after you have the personal experience with it. It’s always so much easier to give a recommendation on something if you have used it yourself, right?

I am not a boxer, but have had experience in the Martial Arts area. We also needed to wear protective gear when sparring, especially when you were a newer student. I see that the RDX Maya Hide Leather Boxing Headgear did have a higher protection rating, and thicker padding.
That’s probably why you preferred that one?

The only drawback you mentioned was that there had been a short break-in period for it, but that’s hardly a “Con” really. Most everything made out of leather requires break-in of some sort, even my cowboy boots needed one!

The RDX Boxing MMA protector Headgear might be a better choice for someone who needed an advantage, since it had less padding, making it lighter and easier to move fast while wearing it. Both Headgear had pretty high protective ratings, so I guess one would have to try each one on to really be able to choose well. Thanks for the detailed information! Which of the headgear would you recommend for a woman?

    1. Hi, yeah I generally give recommendations based on my personal experiences or after a thorough research. But if it is about boxing, I generally tried it out every product on the lists including this one.
RDX Maya provides good full face protection and after you get punched, your peripheral vision does not lower at all. As you said it has a denser padding and because of it, it increases the break-in period. However, it is only a couple of weeks and a good choice for sparring.
Also, any of these headgears can be used by women.

    Hi Furkan,

Thank you for the reviews of your top three boxing headgear for nose protection. It is vital to keep your head safe while training, and a boxing match is something else. There you are left to your skill to defend your head against opponents punches. On the other hand, good headgear can help a lot while training. It keeps mind off the thoughts of getting punched so you can concentrate on your defense. Once the match comes, that gear pays off in dividends.

I am not a boxer my self, however, I am always interested in the sport. Thank you for the information provided. All the best.

    Ivan

    1. You are exactly right. Other than your skills boxing headgear is the only protection during sparring for your head. And I am generally worried about my nose as I had a surgery a couple of years ago. But when I know that I am protected well. I also feel way more comfortable during a session.

  7. The Cleto Reyes Headgear looks nice. I practice with this other headgear at the Muay Thai Club I go to and it is not all that great. It is tight to my face and I barely see anything. It does provide plenty of protection, but I feel like someone strapped a cat to my head.

I do have a question. When it comes to headgear, is leather going to be the highest quality material? I would prefer the construction to be of another material since I am vegetarian.

Thank you for sharing and I hope you make it a great day!

    1. Yeah, unfortunately, many headgears don’t provide enough peripherial vision and yours is definitely one of them. Probably the nose bar is thicker than it should be…
There are synthetic ones like Hayabusa but many good headgears are made of genuine leather.
