Best MMA Mats (For All Around Training and Grappling)

MMA mats need to have certain qualities and these are just vital for you to have proper sessions for long years.

I have trained on a couple of mats which just suck and these mats slid or did not have proper shock absorbing qualities. Anyway, I am an active member in many MMA forums and I also have trained in MMA gyms over 4 years. According to all of these, I gathered best MMA mats for all-around training and I am %100 sure that these will be perfect for gym, your own home or anywhere you want to train.

Without further ado let’s start with review of the best MMA mats

  • Incredible durability (1.25″ thickness)
  • Does not irritate skin
  • Stays in place
  • Antimicrobial
  • Dollamur quality
  • Many people’s first choice for MMA
  • Many colors
  • Very easy to set up

First of all, these mats’ quality is the same with competition mats’ quality. Before I get into any technical stuff, seriously it is the most quality MMA mat you can find.

It has 1.25″ thickness and it is made of an athletic grade closed cell. As many other good MMA mats, Dollamur also uses polyurethane for absorbing the shock and according to my experiences, it just works excellent for mats.

It uses seriously top-notch materials and you don’t have to worry about the space between tiles’ empty space. Since it has only two pieces 😉 and once these get together, these will stay in place all the time. So it does not matter which MMA training type you do. You can put a free standing punching bag on Dollamur and practice low-knee strikes or you can do sparring with your partner or groundwork. It is the best MMA mats for grappling as well.

Anti-odor and Antimicrobial: It is made of good quality materials which eliminate odor and bacteria. It is actually detrimental because after some time mats can cause many skin diseases and trust me, these things can smell however Bio-PrufTM technology gets quite good feedback from many people and according to my research, it has many backed up scientific explanations why Dollamur uses this material to eliminate the bacteria and smell.

What Do Forum Members and My Trainers Say? I found out that many forum members (MMA) go with these mats. I even read that a member, who is trusted by the community, has been using this mat for 5 years and that is quite impressive.

Durability: According to my research, you can easily expect to do any kind of MMA training on Dollamur around 5 years.

Humidity and Temperature Changes: Dollamur’s construction is not affected by humidity and temperature changes. Even though this looks like a tiny detail, this can affect the durability.

Shortly, Dollamur is an excellent MMA mat which always gets amazing reviews from everywhere and I know that you can trust the brand.

It is suitable for everywhere including your own place and gyms. Also, it has only two pieces so it is extremely easy to set up.

  • Made of non-toxic materials
  • Very durable

  • Very suitable for MMA and other martial arts
  • Easy to setup
  • 1-year warranty
  • I have good experiences with it
  • Has the greatest quality price ratio
  • Many color selections including gray, red and blue

My experiences: This is the only mat, which I had trained on, on this list. I trained and did many groundwork sessions on it in Samut Prakan’s MMA gym for months. First of all, I have a very sensitive skin. I actually don’t know anyone who has more sensitive skin than me. Anyway, my skin did not get irritated not even once. As you may know EVA-foam it is preferred a lot for martial arts mats and does not put any pressure on your joints. Shortly, I never had any problems while I am training.

It is water resistant and if you pour some water on it accidentally, it won’t hurt the construction of mats and yes this is a huge problem for many other mats.

It is a tile style mat and even though I did not put together these mats, many verified purchase reviews say that they can do it within minutes.

Considering the premium durability and quality, it has the greatest quality-price ratio. Also, keep in mind that IncStores has a 1-year warranty and you simply can’t find any warranty period for many other mats on the market. So it is another HUGE plus.

Price: Check out the most recent price and other colors of IncStores on Amazon.

As a final note, this mat is the first choice of many commercial MMA gyms however many people also prefer these mats for their own apartments.

3. Z-Athletic 4ft x 8ft x 2in Gymnastics & Exercise Folding Mats

review of the best home mats for grappling

Company: Z-Athletic

Dimensions: 4’x8’x2″ unfolded, 49″x25″x9″ folded

Thickness: 1″

Training Quality (absorbing shock, not sliding):  9.2 / 10.0

Durability: 9.1 / 10.0

Quality / Price Rating: 9.6 / 10.0

Exclusive Features
  • Best folding mats
  • Polyurethane foam
  • Very suitable for martial arts
  • Can be connected to other mats
  • One of the most popular mats on the market
  • Just lay it and start training
  • Quite suitable for home!

Yes, just lay and start training because it is a folding type mat. As the mat above, this one also uses polyurethane foam and it absorbs the shock well.

The material quality is slightly lower than others so this one gets the third spot on my list. It is made of vinyl and after 2-3 years of training, I am sure that there will be some rough spots on it. With that, according to verified purchase reviews, the durability of this one is longer than 3 years.

It has hook and loop closure and you can connect with other mats. So if you will ever need more space, just get another one and connect it to another mat within seconds and considering these, this mat is extremely suitable for your apartment.

You have many color selections including black and purple. You can clean this mat with wipes without any issues as well!

4. IncStores – Tatami Foam Tiles Product Overview

Exclusive Features
  • Cell EVA foam (absorbs shock pretty well)
  • Made of non-toxic materials
  • Durable
  • Resistant to water
  • 1-year warranty
  • Very suitable for MMA
  • Best cheap MMA mats

This mat has actually the exact same design with number 2 mats on this list. It is made by same company and even has the same high-quality shock absorbing material which is cell EVA foam.

Tatami tiles are also waterproof and made of non-toxic materials and it is light as well. However, as you may have already guessed the material quality is lower and this is why the durability is lower. But the good news is that the price is cheaper.

According to the manufacturer, after you make the purchase, the company ships the products the same or the next day. I think that is another plus of it.

Price: It is the cheapest mats which have good quality. Check out the price of IncStore Tatami on Amazon.

  1. Thanks for your recommendations about the best mma mats. I always use your site as a helpful resource when making a decision in buying new equipment for my training. The Dollamur mat seems like the way to go but can you tell me whether there is a warranty with this one? , You mention how it can last up to 5 years but if something was to go wrong would I be covered? Just that some of the others provide 1 years warranty.

    1. As you said some of them provide 1-year warranty and I just provided links to product pages and if mats have warranty period you can find them at there. But so far I never have seen a warranty period which is more than 3 years. But these MMA mats are preferred a lot and have amazing reviews so I really think that you can use them without a problem for a long time.

  2. I’ve trained on the Z-athletic ones before, they were fine. I liked them but I think now I would prefer something more efficient like the dollamur. Fighters don’t realize but a good training mat is imperative.

    1. Dollamur is just great and I know Z-athletic is preferred a lot in homes. Also, I totally agree with you many fighters don’t even realize the importance of good quality mats. It can change MMA training performance drastically.

  3. Great article, many people struggle in buying gym mats. This article will help them in choosing the best one especially MMA mats. I would love to share this articles with others to make their job easy in choosing gym mat…

    1. Yes, actually we also had the same struggles. After we found some suitable mats of our MMA gym I figured that I should have a writing on my site.

  4. Thanks for giving an in-depth overview of MMA mats. Will be recommending your site to others surely. I think I will go with Dollamur since it seems to be the best.

  5. Great article, thank you for all the info. I didn’t know that much about mats but I will need one for my trainings too. And thanks to you I’ll go for Tatami Foam Tiles because I saw them in a gym I used to visit and I like the puzzle feature to connect the tiles.

    1. Tatami Foam Tiles are used in many gyms. I have seen reviews of MMA gyms online as well. If you go with it, I am sure that it will do the job fine for years.

  6. Nice information. My husband used to do MMA and I remember telling him at the gym, how terrible it smelled. Not all the sweat, well that could have contributed but it smelled like disinfectant. It was from the mat cleaner and I could not take it. These antimicrobial mats are a good investment.

    1. Exactly cleaning mats can be difficult and if the mats don’t have certain qualities like antimicrobial, anti-odor etc. it can try your patience and take a long time to clean them too. This is another reason why I chose these mats over others.
Also, there will be blood and sweat on these mats constantly, so it is quite important to be careful about it.

  7. I am wondering if you use these mats when working out with a punching bag? Is this what I need to put on the floor for traction possibly? I am kind of at a loss as to what the mats are specifically for. I want to start boxing as a good exercise and for self defense. So not sure if I need these or not.

    1. If the floor of your home is not suitable for training you should definitely get some mats since these don’t only protect the floors and as you said it provides more traction so you don’t slip during your session. So, shortly getting mats is an absolute must for you.

  8. I’ve never tried MMA but I guess these are good for working out at home too? I am looking for a good quality mat for working out at home, preferably I can also practise yoga on it but I have a sensitive nose and skin. Do you recommend any good mat? 🙂

    1. Interestingly enough you can use many of these mats for training at home. Always consider what you need from mats. For example, if you want to put it away after you finish rolling on them you want it to be foldable or if you think of moving it constantly, your mats should have handles. In your case, Z-Athletic fits the bill. You can find the link somewhere above.
