Best Mouthguards for Boxing, BJJ, MMA – The Ultimate Guide

If you train for boxing, BJJ, MMA or any combat sports you need good protective gears and mouthguard is one of the essential ones.

Wearing a mouthguard can prevent you from having a concussion and provide so many benefits which you are probably not aware of like protecting lips.

So I gathered the most quality ones for these martial arts so you can be safer while sparring, competing.

Best Boxing MMA, BJJ Mouthguards

1. Impact Custom Professional MMA

Protection Rating: 10.0 / 10.0

Comfort: 9.8 / 10.0

Durability: 10.0 / 10.0

Quality / Price: 9.4 / 10.0

Check It Out: on Here

Pros

  • The sturdiest and most durable mouthguard on the market!
  • Custom-fit
  • Ideal for boxing, BJJ and MMA
  • Very ergonomic design
  • Easy to breathe, drink water and talk
  • Comfortable to wear
  • Professional grade
  • Lots of color selections

Impact Custom is made of top-notch materials and these BPA free materials absorb the shock very well. The thickness is around 6-7 mm and Impact Custom allows a decent amount of oxygen.

This company makes a custom guard for you. Firstly, you make the order and you will get a kit. After that, just follow the instructions and make an impression.

By the way, I checked out the instructions and these are really easy to follow and you can make the impression in two minutes. After you make the impression, you will send your impression back to Impact using the postage-paid label provided in the kit. Then the company will make a custom guard for you.

You can get the same quality mouthpiece by going to the dentist. But I really hate dentists and I am sure that they will charge you way more than Impact. Also, the materials and design may not be suitable for MMA. These may not be ideal for absorbing the shock etc. So if you get it from a dentist and your mouthguard comes out of your mouth during sparring, you will at least know whose fault it is.

Shortly, I highly suggest you go with a mouthpiece that is used by more than ten thousand people and it gets really good feedback.

As you know, you don’t need to prepare it like you do with boil and bite mouth guards and after reading the comments, I know that many people just can’t get it done properly. Because of that reason, these don’t offer good protection. However, this is simply not an issue with this guard.

Based on my extensive research, everything about this mouthguard is perfect. Over 15.000 Custom Impact Guards are handcrafted and as you may already know, this guard has a good reputation on many boxing, BJJ forums as well. Also, many forum members say that they can speak well enough while wearing this. If you are interested in Custom Impact, have a look at the experiences of verified customer reviews for more in-depth information.

2. SISU Mouth Guards Aero 1.6 mm

Protection Rating: 8.7 / 10.0

Comfort: 9.9 / 10.0

Durability: 9.3 / 10.0

Quality / Price: 9.8 / 10.0

Pros

  • Next-gen shock-absorbing materials and design
  • Very thin (1.6 mm)
  • One of the top MMA mouthguards
  • Very easy to breathe, drink water and talk
  • Really thin
  • I have had good experiences with it!
  • A myriad of color selections (orange, hot pink…)

Sisu is arguably the best mouthguard company out there. I also have experiences with Sisu Guards and my experiences were always amazing with them.

This guard has 1.6 mm thickness so it is quite thin however it has a very good design. Thus when you grapple or spar, it does not bother you at all. After all, it is really thin and as you can see from the pictures, it has a very ergonomic design. It also has holes and you can drink and talk pretty easily with it. Sisu Aero 1.6 mm is also moldable so if you screw up while molding, you can just remold it so it can be a better fit.

I used two Sisu Aero 1.6 mm mouthguards. These were really comfortable. I actually get bothered too easily while wearing a regular mouthpiece and this is one of the reasons why I preferred Sisu. When I got punched or a knee, obviously my soft tissue got hurt but I never lost a tooth or had any long-term gum injury.

So I highly recommend Sisu Aero 1.6 mm. It also has many color selections including pink and electric blue. If you want to see these, you can have a closer look at these color selections here. As a final note, it offers warrantied dental protection.

3. Shock Doctor Double Braces Mouthguard

Protection Rating: 8.5 / 10.0

Comfort: 8.5 / 10.0

Durability: 8.7 / 10.0

Quality / Price: 10.0 / 10.0

Pros

  • Good material quality (medical-grade silicon)
  • Protects upper and lower teeth
  • Stays in place
  • You don’t need to boil it!
  • Best mouth guard for MMA with braces
  • The most quality double mouthguard!

If you sparred before, I am sure that you have at least heard of Shock Doctor. As you can see from the picture, it protects your upper and lower teeth. There are studies that show that a double mouthguard is better for protecting your jaw. If you prefer a double mouth guard instead of a single guard or you have braces, Shock Doctor Double Braces Mouthguard is the top mouth guard in its class.

Because it can protect your gums and teeth with the ergonomic design. However, it is bulkier than others. Considering the other double mouth guards, it is way less likely to come out of your mouth when you roll on the mats.

This design also provides a comfortable fit so it does not hurt your soft tissue. With that, it is still bulky and has extra air channels for you to breathe better and you don’t need to boil it. Thus when you get the order, you are good to go. You have strapped and strapless options.

4. Venum Challenger Mouthguard

Protection Rating: 8.6 / 10.0

Comfort: 8.9 / 10.0

Durability: 8.5 / 10.0

Quality / Price Ratio Rating: 9.9 / 10.0

Unique Pros

  • Sturdy rubber frame
  • Does the job just fine
  • Good boil and bite mouth guard for boxing, BJJ…
  • Has certifications
  • The most popular mouthguard on the market
  • Comes with a protective case and many cool color selections

Venum Challenger has a classic design and sturdy rubber frame. Many people prefer it for sparring and Venum Challenger actually has certification/NORM called SATRA M33:2011 which your mouthguard should have if you plan on entering MMA tournaments. So if you are serious about your training, it is actually a solid choice as it has the necessary certifications. So you can be sure that it will protect you. Rubber frame also does a good job of protecting your gums.

Many trainers in MMA and BJJ gyms suggest Venum to trainees. As I stated above, this is quite popular and generally gets quite good feedback. So I really think that Venum Challenger is a “safe” choice. In the product description, you can find everything you need to know about boiling and fitting. Also, it is quite affordable.

5. Shock Doctor Pro Mouth Guard

Protection Rating: 8.2 / 10.0

Comfort: 8.8 / 10.0

Durability: 7.8 / 10.0

Quality / Price Ratio Rating: 9.9 / 10.0

Unique Pros

  • Classic design
  • Decent material quality
  • Boil and bite type
  • Cheapest mouthguard which has good reviews!

Yes, there is another Shock Doctor Mouth Guard on this list. This one is also boil and bite type guard and has very good fitting rates.

It is thin like Venum Challenger, however, the material quality is not as good. According to verified reviews, you can expect to use it around one year and Shock Doctor Pro Mouth Guard is the cheapest mouthguard that has a good quality. It has layers and the impact softens between the layers. This method helps it absorb the shock at a faster rate as well.

It has a very cool video on the product page and you can have a close look at this good boxing, MMA mouthpiece there. It has strapped and strapless options as well.

Martial Arts Mouthguard Buyer’s Guide

Design and Thickness: Mouthguards should not be bulky and should have ergonomic designs. Because fighters get hit all the time and this can increase the likelihood of soft tissue injury. As long as these are made of quality materials ergonomic mouthguards can provide amazing protection. Also, bigger ones, that can’t distribute the shock well, just suck. So, size and thickness do not matter. You may notice some boxing mouthguards have holes. Thus boxers can breathe easier with them as these allow more air while breathing.

Durability: It depends on the materials and design. Boil and bite type generally lasts around a year and you can expect significantly longer durability from custom mouthguards. Even the best boil-and-bite mouthguards can’t compare with custom ones.

Custom Mouthguards: A few reputable martial arts companies produce custom mouthguards. These should be preferred for MMA sessions as custom ones are quite small and as long as you make the impression right this type of mouthguard tends to provide the best fit.

Materials: Mouthguard’s material should not cause harm to soft tissue and absorb the impact fast. Rubber frame, military-grade materials are generally considered as good. These minimize the risk of concussions. Also, make sure to check out whether a mouthguard includes BPA and other harmful chemicals or not. Even though most companies can produce quality martial arts mouthpieces for training it does not mean that they care about whether the product is eco-friendly or not. So you need to do your own research in some cases.

Value: Most boxing, and MMA mouthguards are quite cheap and some come with cases. There are a lot of companies that produce quality ones so the competition is stiff. Thus value is great.

As a side note, these mouthguards can be used for any martial arts including karate, wrestling and judo.

My Experiences with Various Companies

Venum: I have used three different Venum mouthguard models for sparring and one of them hurt my soft tissue more than usual. My gums bled more than usual while wearing that jiu-jitsu mouthpiece. Other than that, I could easily breathe and talk well enough with all of them. The material quality is above average and the rubber frame seems to stay solid for years.

Sisu: Unlike Venum, Sisu focuses on producing only mouthguards. It has amazing designs and mouthpieces are made of top-notch materials. These are the reasons why these have ergonomic designs, stay in place and also can protect your teeth.

Shock Doctor: One of my friends had his tooth chipped while wearing one of the Shock Doctor Mouthguards. However, one of my favorites is made by this company. It was really small and had protected my jaw quite well for two years. So you definitely need to check out the reviews before you buy Shock Doctor mouthguard.

Because not only material quality is different for every product but also designs are different. So some can protect your teeth and jaw well however if you don’t make a good choice you may end up sharing my friend’s faith.

Don’t Settle for a Low-Quality Mouth Guard!

Alright, if you come this far, you already know the importance of wearing a good quality mouthguard. With that, Custom Impact fits your mouth perfectly since it is custom-made! Also, the company knows which materials are ideal for fighters. Shortly, it gives you the best of two worlds. If these are appealing to you, get your own Custom Impact and start using it during your sessions. It is seriously the best MMA mouthguard and can be used for boxing, wrestling, jiu-jitsu…

  1. I clicked on this page out of curiosity and I’m glad I did because I definitely learned something new. I had no idea there was that much variety in mouth guards. Great reviews and I’ll share with a couple of friends who practice martial arts. Have a great day!

  2. Wow! Month Guards have really advanced since my boxing days. My son is starting MMA. From out the three, you preferred, I still can’t choose because I may choose what I think is right for him but he may not like it. I am so worried about teeth being broken and that’s why I don’t want the Shock Doctor.

I will give it more thought or just have him look over your review to pick his own. However, I think I will get him the Custom Impact and Sisu guard for him.

    Thank you for sharing :-).

    1. Yeah man. I agree with that. The technology just keeps getting better and better. These get really small. I remember that I couldn’t even talk with them when I was wearing one.

If he is just a beginner, definitely get a thin one and Shock Doctor is not a good choice for it. The bottom is bigger than the others and it can cause some discomfort for your son’s gums. No one wants that especially in his first days.
Whether he is just a beginner or advanced Custom Impact will be a better choice. And obviously, he can expect a perfect fit.

  3. Great article on mouth guards. I have used both the opro and the shock doctor myself. Shock doctor is a great mouth guard, but I am a big fan of opro as well. I also agree with the fact that having the right mouth guard is absolutely important for the teeth and to help prevent concussion

    1. I really don’t have any experience with Opro But it is a popular mouth guard brand.

I just made a quick research and the designs and materials seem so “basic” and the products have not been upgraded for years and it is always a bad sign. Also after hearing your experience, I will definitely avoid these mouth guards.

  4. Have you tried Oral Mart sports mouth guards? Easy to fit, comfortable to wear, durable to last. Great reviews from satisfied customers. Comes with a complimentary case. Why spend hundreds on custom mouth guards or thousands on dental mouth guards if you could make boil and bite sports mouth guards work?

    1. Well, I have not tried them yet but I have encountered people who have. Considering what I hear people can use these mouth guards during martial arts session.
