There are a lot of top quality BJJ, Wrestling mats however many of them have expensive price tags. So finding a good and affordable one can be a difficult task. With that, I researched all forums and as you may know, I also have been in many buying processes for BJJ gyms and I also gathered information from other online sources. Shortly, I did my homework and came up with 3 good quality and cheap BJJ, judo, and wrestling mats.
Let’s start with the overview of the most quality one…
1. Norsk Truly Reversible 3/4″
Check It Out: on Amazon
Training Quality (absorbing shock, not sliding): 9.4 / 10.0
Durability: 9.1 / 10.0
Quality / Price Rating: 9.6 / 10.0
- Good shock absorbing foam
- Moisture resistant
- Light and portable
- Stays stable
- Can be connected with other mats
- Many color selections
- Very easy to clean
These foam mats are thin however foam has definitely decent quality and the material basically withstands the repetitive impacts for a long time. The thickness is 0.75″ and it is dense. This quality makes it suitable for BJJ, judo, and wrestling so while you are doing suplex, you don’t have to worry about your grappling dummy or sparring partner a lot ; )
Another plus is that you can connect it with other tiles quite easily and make a larger training area.
As a side note, you can do battle rope training or any other plyometrics on it. Since it can absorb the sound very well.
Both surfaces of these mats can be usable and if one side starts looking bad you can just reverse it and continue using it. Also, you can clean these mats with water and soap without hurting the materials.
As a final note, I have witnessed that 2 wrestling local gyms use this one. If you prefer a larger training area, I highly recommend you to get this one since tile mats can get expensive and Norsk has a really good quality-price ratio as well.
2. Everlast 2′ x 6′ Folding Mat
Training Quality (absorbing shock, not sliding): 9.1 / 10.0
Durability: 9.3 / 10.0
Quality / Price Rating: 9.0 / 10.0
- Soft shell
- Foam supports your body
- Foldable and easy to carry
- One of the most popular mats
- Very easy to clean
Everlast’s cover material is soft and easy to clean. With that, it gets good ratings for not slipping. However, keep in mind that you should not use this mat on wooden floors.
Foam basically distributes shock throughout the mat and thanks to that you will have fewer bruises. Especially if you will do sparring, this quality can come in handy.
It is foldable and has handles so after you finish your session, you can fold it and carry easily.
As a final note, according to my research, Everlast Folding Mat is one of the most popular mats on the market.
3. ProSource Bi-Fold Folding Thick Exercise Mat
Training Quality (absorbing shock, not sliding): 8.7 / 10.0
Durability: 9.0 / 10.0
Quality / Price Rating: 9.3 / 10.0
- Good and firm support
- Foldable and easy to carry
- Water resistant
- You can train at anywhere
- Very good price tag!
- Limited lifetime warranty!
The foam of this one is a bit stiffer than usual and it is the characteristic quality of EPE. Actually, it is one of the most preferred materials for BJJ mats. Since while you are rolling, the foam does not move much and it makes sure that you have a good ground work session.
Thanks to this quality of foam, it has fewer defects than normal and this improves the durability. Basically, you can expect foam to outlast the cover material.
ProSource is foldable and has handles so you can carry it easily. With that, the cover material is suitable for many places. You can train at anywhere including outside. Because it is not affected by the sun so if you also think of doing your sessions outside, this one can be a great option.
This one also has a lifetime limited warranty! If you are interested, click here for more information.
Recommendations: Alright, I know that you try saving some money and I have been there. With that, while you buy mats, there are many variables. For example, these may have some thickness and foam quantity differences. You basically can’t have that.
Also if you buy from a company, which does not have a myriad of feedbacks, you may end up having many problems. For example, I got mats and the foam quantity was different for almost every single mat! We basically could not train and the company did not even respond to us! Well, I had to go to a local sports center in Samut Prakan, Thailand on a rainy day and got mats. Truly it was not a pleasant memory. Shortly, while you buy any mats, read the overviews and (real) customer testimonials!
Also, your mats should be water and puncture resistant. Even if you get affordable mats, these mats should have these qualities. I know that these look like minor details, however, these qualities can improve the durability over a year! Also even if your mats have all the safety qualities, always wear necessary gears (grappling socks, wrestling shoes…) while doing your training.
These are honestly “safe” choices. Two of these have many reviews all over the internet and I have personal experiences with the other one. With that, Norsk gets amazing reviews and it even made the many best lists! It has very good shock absorbing qualities and is made with decent quality materials and a lot of commercial wrestling, BJJ gyms also use them. If these are appealing to you, get your own Norsk on Amazon and start training right away! You can also connect it with other tiles.
I really hope that you enjoyed reading and if you need any further information about any of these cheap judo, BJJ, and wrestling mats leave a comment below or just shoot me an e-mail and I will get back to you as soon as I can.
If you also have any questions about a specific mat model, let me know and after I research it, I will get back to you.
