Fairtex BGV6 Stylish Angular Sparring Gloves Review

fairtex bgv6 review

Fairtex Company produces a wide range of boxing glove types including training type and sparring gloves like this pair. Fairtex BGV6 is actually quite different than the other models like BGV5, 9, 14, etc. And in this Fairtex BGV6 review you can read all about them.

This Muay Thai style boxing glove may not be everyone’s cup of tea, however many would love to go to the gym and train with the pair. The reason is that it has many different features and you need to decide after you read them whether it is suitable for you or not.

First of all, this pair is ideal for sparring and you can also punch the mitts with this one. However, it is not suitable for punching bag workouts so if you are looking for all-around training Fairtex gloves, go to my Fairtex BGV9 review. However, if you will spar in the ring and do drills from time to time, this pair (Fairtex BGV6) definitely should be in your consideration.

1. Padding and Protection

As you know, Muay Thai gloves have less padding on the knuckle compartment when you compare them to boxing gloves since Muay Thai type gloves are not only used for uppercuts, hooks… basically punching. These can clinch and should have a design and padding distribution which are suitable for Muay Thai. Fairtex BGV6 is not suitable for clinching and does not have enough flexibility so, in this way, it is more of a pure boxing glove. These have more padding in the knuckle compartment. This provides more protection for the knuckles and sparring partners.

However, it has less padding on the upper part. So while blocking elbows, punches, and kicks, your hands get more impact. So doing sparring (focused on punching) is basically ideal for BGV6.  It has also some padding on the thumb part and it is curved which is ideal for sparring since it reduces the chances of injuring the opponent.  So shortly your knuckles are less likely to have bruises, however, depending on how hard your sparring hit the upper side of your hand can get bruises.

The padding is not built for constant punishment during heavy bag workouts. The padding memory can get quite awful if you do bag drills regularly. However, the mitts are not as tough as punching bags and if you do that from time to time, there will be no issues. There are many people in Thailand who use this pair during the mitt sessions.

Overall, the padding gets B+.

Padding provides above average protection for your hand. What about wrist support? The wrist part is snug and many small-handed people like me reported that it is quite snug. It is another point to note.

The strap has a regular size at the beginning and it gets smaller through the end. This design actually is not used much but it is tight and other than being slightly tighter than expected there are not any issues.

The attached thumb prevents your thumb and partner to get injured. However, it is curved and some may not feel natural with it.

2. Design

Fairtex BGV9 has a quite tapered design. It is bulky at the knuckle part and the wrist compartment is really small when it is compared to other boxing gloves of the BGV series. It also has less padding around the wrist and upper hand part. This design is suitable for you to gain momentum while punching. The heavily padded knuckle part is heavier and while you are punching, this increases momentum. In addition to that, the less padded upper part does not slow you down and this also does not lower the speed. So you don’t lose extra energy. The design is basically perfect for training performance.

3. Comfort and Air Circulation

Unlike other Fairtex gloves, the inner lining is softer than usual. However, even though it is softer it gets feedback like it should be softer. So if you are a hard puncher, you will have a slight discomfort with this pair comparing to gloves which have an extra soft lining like Twins Special. Personally, I don’t mind it since as I stated it is just a slight discomfort due to the toughness. On the other hand, the air channels are big and these gloves are built to provide comfort in a hot and humid environment in Thailand. It wicks the sweat at a normal rate and in this way some of it can escape as well.

If you sweat a lot in a short amount of time like I do these gloves will get heavier during your session. So it is best to put your gloves on just before you start training. Since I see that so many fighters put on the gloves and wait for their turns to practice or fight. So before they get into the ring they already sweated and the gloves got heavier. So putting them on just before you step into the ring can help with that.

4. The Durability

The leather of BGV6 is just great. It is genuine and according to my research, the stitching doesn’t feel like it is going to become loose any time soon. These are extra solid and this is actually the signature of this particular brand.

Even though I had a lot of experiences with the BGV series I have not used this model. However many people on forums (Sherdog, martial arts talk) reported that they have been using BGV6 for 3+ years. The genuine leather has regular thickness. And after 3 years, the padding start being even softer before the leather’s construction gets bad. This can jeopardize your physical health. At this point, it is time to replace this pair with other sparring gloves.

5. Some Points for Improvement

Well, there is always something to improve. Other than Winning and a couple of specific glove models, in my opinion, all models can improve. This one’s lining is tougher than normal. So while punching, you may feel slight discomfort from time to time. But it is way softer than Fairtex BGV1’s lining and this pair is preferred a lot for all-around training.

There is a break-in period. Thanks to the softer padding, you have an easier time to fully break in this pair comparing to the other BGV gloves. However, there is still a need to step in the ring a couple of weeks more than usual to fully break-in these gloves. This period should be less.

So these points can use some improvements.

6. Aesthetics, Colors…

The company offers a wide range of color and design selections. Honestly, it is really not hard to find something you really like. These gloves have selections from 10 oz. to 18 oz. With that, these are not really huge like so many other sparring type gloves and have quite a tapered shape like pure boxing gloves which I really like. Well, the company did not call this glove “stylish” for no reason.

7. Price

Let’s talk about cost-efficiency.

These gloves have good padding quality. It is not like Winning’s padding which is referred to as pillow however it does the job just fine and the impact deliverance is quite good and so little. So even though you punch your sparring partner hard there is a high chance that they will continue choosing you as his / her sparring partner next time. This glove lasts at least 3 years which was told over and over again by many martial arts forum members. In addition to that, this pair is handmade and this also increases the price. Considering all of these I can say that Fairtex BGV6 has quite good cost-efficiency.

8. Keep in Mind This

This pair is not suitable for any kind of bag work and it does not matter whether you are punching lightly or not. The padding quality gets lower and lower with every punch. This does not affect the safety much, however, the padding does not deliver the shock effectively like bag gloves and you don’t hear that “pop” sound ever with this glove when you are punching a heavy bag.

If you want to do bag work and the other training types, drills, you need training type gloves.

9. Final Thoughts

Guys, if you are looking to get into the ring and punch your sparring partner with a glove that is safe for you and your partner and delivers high performance with a good padding distribution (concentrated on knuckles more) seriously get your own Fairtex BGV6. Even though it has a long break-in period and a slightly tough inner lining there is not any negative other than these.

I covered everything you need to know about these sparring gloves, its features, provided comparisons between the other BGV models like BGV9 in this Fairtex BGV6 review. I hope you enjoyed reading and if you have any questions or better yet used this glove, have a comment below!

  1. These sound like some great gloves. I have been using everlast boxing gloves in my Muay Thai training but I think that I should change them to some actual MMA gloves. I will definitely be looking into these.

    1. This is what you exactly should do. Pure boxing gloves can be only used for punching and you can’t do any grapple techniques with them. So how can one expect to improve his/her MMA technique with boxing gloves?
So getting a proper MMA pair is what you need to do.

    Hi there,

Thank you for your time and effort for creating a great review.

As an ex professional boxer I have spend a lot of times with gloves and destroyed a lot of them because of the intense training day after day after day.

Nice review about the gloves. I have never used these gloves myself but once I will train a little but more and I need new gloves I know I have review about new gloves which I can try out.

    Great and thanks again

    1. It is good to hear these from a professional boxer as it shows that I am on the right track. Well, have not we all? But I guess these can stand to more constant punishment than many other average gloves.

After long usage, you are more than welcome to share your experiences with us.

  3. Thanks for the detailed review on Fairtex BGV6 Stylish Angular Sparring Gloves.  It really helped me make up my mind. I’m gonna go with the WINNING Training Boxing Gloves you reviewed on your other article.

Do you have any recommendations for a good punching bag I can buy for my apartment?

    1. Well, Winning is better than Fairtex BGV6 in every aspect including cushioning, really soft padding and better protection. If you have the money, you should go with Winning. But I know it is not the case for many people including me.

Yeah, I have a writing which includes quite good versatile and portable bags. You can check out these good punching bags for apartments and you can read how you should choose one for small spaces as well.

  4. These are some great reviews. It’s funny but I was actually thinking of getting into boxing, more for physical fitness than anything. What is the difference between sparring and just boxing and would you recommend a specific glove for a beginner?

    1. Man, you need to do lots of reading and watch matches etc. as you don’t even know the basic concepts and I really can’t answer these broad questions here as I probably will need to write a couple of pages. Just do some Google research and go on from there.

  5. Hello, I bought these gloves, but when they arrived I felt that they had very little padding and that it would hurt my sparring partner, I returned them. My question is, was I wrong to return them since the glove is like that or were they defective?

    1. Hi Javier, what do you mean by little padding? Did you check the oz.? Maybe you were comparing it to another pair of gloves which is a different size.

      1. Hi Furkan, they were 14 oz, for a complete workout (a bit of bag, combinations and sparring) which glove do you recommend? bgv6 or bgv9

  6. hi, for boxing which you recommend? bgv6, bgv5 or everlast powerlock 2 pro? in general training (sparring, heavy bags and padwork)
