Which Qualities should your Home Mats Have?

Water and Mildew Resistant: These provide longer durability and if your mats have water-resistant qualities, you always get good training performance and if you pour water on it accidentally it won’t be an issue.

Versatility: Considering that you want to use the mats in your home, easy storage can come in handy. Foldable mats and mats, which can be rolled, are just perfect for this. Also if you have a space issue in your place or want to move them, obviously you will need to prefer light and portable mats.

Also, detachable edge pieces provide versatility. Let’s say that you need to make a mat a corner and as you may know, some mats just are not suitable for it. However, if your mat has detachable pieces, you can actually do it quite easily without any hassle. At the same time, you can also do that mat a body. So if you ever need to move your mats to another room or place, the edges may not be a right fit for another room and this would suck, right? Well, detachable edge pieces can save you.

Also, you can use both sides, which have different colors, of some mats and again if you need to paint your room, at least one of the sides will probably be a nice match ; )

I also highly recommend you to get mats which can be connected with others since you may need extra training space in future.

Protection and Safety: You need to protect yourself and your floors. The shock absorbing qualities need to be superb and if you are living in a rental, this can save you from many problems. The mats also should stay in place and since you don’t have gym floors, the materials of your mat should be suitable for it. For example, vinyl is a good material for it and as a side note, the materials on this list provide it.

Cleaning: These mats on this list can be cleaned easily with antibacterial wipes etc. and also don’t hold dust as well so you don’t have to worry about a thing for cleaning.

Benefits of Having Wrestling, BJJ, and Judo Mats for Home: Let’s say that you have a sparring partner so you basically don’t need to go to a martial arts gym and you can simply practice in your own home comfort. Even though I haven’t had that luxury yet, it gives you mental relaxation. Because you can practice at any hour and you simply may not find mats to train in a gym. And if you don’t have a sparring partner, you may also practice everything with a good grappling dummy. Since these are pretty versatile and you can easily find one for need (wrestling, BJJ, or Judo). So if you want to improve your technique while doing suplexes, throws, takedowns, ground work, submissions (arm bar, knee bar etc.) etc. , having your own mats is just ideal for you. Because you can do everything over and over again without worrying about anything (time, hurting your sparring partner etc.).

My Recommendation: Generally, I research every single product and brand. But considering my experiences, you need to go with the trustworthy brands while buying mats. Since I got cheap mats from not well-known companies 3 times and none of these mats are worth my time or my money. As a side note, the customer services of the companies, which are on my list, get good feedbacks from verified buyers.

It’s good to know there’s more to mats than just a color, thank you.

My cousin was training Judo and I remember he said shock-absorbing mat was very important to prevent injuries. So, I would probably go for the one with shock absorbing foam – 1” Interlocking Foam Tiles.
