Lonsdale Boxing Gloves Review – The Ultimate Guide

My extensive lonsdale boxing gloves review

Lonsdale is a UK based company and it is one of the most popular boxing equipment companies out there. With that, there are fairly new Lonsdale Boxing Gloves on the market and some of these actually have really good quality.

In this Lonsdale Boxing Gloves review, you can find all about high-quality Lonsdale pairs’ qualities, my experiences and you can also read this company’s evolution at the end of the writing. I should add that it is quite interesting.

Exclusive Features

  • Good leather
  • Great padding quality
  • Good training performance
  • Protects hands better (thanks to the design)
  • Perfect for punching bag and pads

First of all, this pair has a bit more padding density at the upper side. So what does it provide for you? First of all, your knuckles, wrists will be safer so the injury risk will be reduced. Also, you will feel way less soreness in your hands after punching a heavy bag or punch mitts.  Since the padding has more area to distribute the shock. Thus you will feel less soreness in your hands. With that, Lonsdale L-core has a training pair padding distribution and this is why you can use this pair for pad and bag work without any issues whatsoever.

Normally you don’t need high-quality leather for punching bag sessions however you do need it for punch mitt drills since the leather has more deformation during these sessions.

This pair is made of cowhide leather and it is sturdy. Due to its sturdiness, there are many good heavy bag gloves which are made of cowhide.

And the padding gets B+ for the training performance.

Considering all of these I can say that Lonsdale L-Core is an ideal pair for heavy bag and pad work. As a side note, I see this pair more and more lately.

It is velcro and according to my research (forums), wrist support gets decent feedback.  If you are interested, you can click here to view more information about this pair.

Lonsdale Pro Safe Spar Hook and Loop Review

Lonsdale Pro Safe Spar Hook and Loop ReviewProtection Rating: 9.6 / 10.0

Training Quality Rating: 9.2 / 10.0

Durability: 9.6 / 10.0

Comfort: 9.9 / 10.0

Quality / Price Rating: 8.8 / 10.0

Exclusive Features

  • High-grade leather
  • Soft padding
  • Ideal for sparring
  • Suitable for other boxing training types
  • Great comfort

Lonsdale Pro Safe’s leather has more quality than the pair above and it is actually needed since you need to protect your sparring partners, right?

It helps you do that with the high-grade leather which basically lasts more and will not have any rough spots to hurt your sparring partner. As you can see it has the classic sparring pair design to provide protection as well.

Padding Distribution: This pair has all-around padding distribution. It has padding at the upper side and it has more padding at the knuckle compartment. So you can be sure that your hands and your partner will get hurt less.

Lonsdale Pro Safe gets A- for sparring and it gets C for other training types. Let me explain the reason. Basically, while you are punching a heavy bag, you need minimal contact duration so your pair needs to deliver the impact immediately but Lonsdale Pro Safe simply can’t do it with its softer padding. So if you will spar, get Lonsdale Pro Safe however if you think of doing other boxing training types like punch mitts go with the pair above (Lonsdale L-Core). Lonsdale says that Pro Safe can be used for bag work and I agree you can use it, however, it is just not ideal.

This one provides more airflow with its bigger air meshes and you can use this pair for long sessions. So everything (padding, leather, and sweat-wicking qualities) is good for longer durability so I can say that it gets A- for the durability easily.

Note: As a side note, you can break in both Lonsdale Boxing Gloves within a week! So just a week later, you can punch and feel “natural” with the pairs so you won’t lose any time and will start having good experience really soon!

Evolution of Lonsdale

Alright, let’s talk about the boxing industry.

There is Lonsdale training type pair which is quite cheap and made of really low-quality materials. And in my and many other’s opinions, it is a copycat of Everlast’s popular training pair. However, Lonsdale basically wiped the slate clean and started producing really good quality pairs. I can say that these are quite different from other pairs on the market and according to me, this is a huge plus. As you may know, there are actually other companies which just copy other companies and these don’t bring something new to the table. So before I did not recommend Lonsdale Boxing Gloves however due to these new and good quality pairs my opinion changed a couple of years ago. As a side note, many local boxing gyms started ordering Lonsdale and this is another good sign which shows that the gloves have decent quality.

Also, Lonsdale does not overprice almost anything other than boxing shoes. In my opinion, these gloves also give you your money’s worth.

Considering all of these I am a believer that these pairs will be really popular. Don’t get me wrong these are popular but I believe that these will be popular as Title Gloves in future.

Final Thoughts

Guys, if it was a couple of years ago I would say that don’t go with Lonsdale. However as I stated a couple of times in this writing, these new pairs have really good quality and different designs. And because of that, these became many people’s favorite training gloves and I know that a myriad of people started going to boxing gyms with only Lonsdale Boxing Gloves since these are better suited them. So I strongly recommend you to give Lonsdale a shot.

  1. Great article and site! Really like how you gave me your number score first and then followed with your reasoning! I’ve always enjoyed Lonsdale!

  2. I have never had experience with Lonsdale gloves before. I liked the review and might have to try them out sometime. I just left a comment on the Rival glove review you left on 3 different pair. What are your thoughts when you compare the Rivals with the Lonsdale gloves?

    1. Yeah, I just saw and wrote a reply. Man, there is a significant quality difference between Rival and Lonsdale and Rival is better at almost every category including padding, wrist support, and cover material quality. Lonsdale Gloves have bigger air channels thus your hands feel more relaxed. But that is about it. Other than that, almost any Rival Gloves are just superior to these. However Lonsdale Boxing Gloves have more affordable price tags and if you are on a tight budget, these gloves do the job just fine and as you can see there are training type gloves above so you can use them for any boxing training type.

  3. 5 Stars – on your review
    5 Stars – Product Presentation
5 Stars – For Honest Opinion

I do walking, jogging and light workout, however, lately, i have noticed boxing is getting very popular nowadays and would want to cross train to that kind of work out. I am anxious if cross training won’t hurt my physique considering i am relatively petite. What is your take on this?

    1. When the matches are exciting and the matches are promoted well that is completely normal. Many petite females do boxing without any problem whatsoever. If you get good protective gears for boxing training, you will not be more likely to get injured than other bigger people.
